W Hotel Amsterdam

My trip to Amsterdam was a fabulous experience. I’m sure you must have read all about it in my previous post on the city and all the lovely options it has to offer for sightseeing, eating out, night out revelry or shopping. This bicycle friendly city has so much to offer which was enhanced by my stay at the hotly anticipated W Amsterdam! A visit to any W Hotel property is like a dream come true. The vibe is so young, energetic and charismatic. W Amsterdam was no different and considering how new this hotel is I was so looking forward to experiencing their hospitality. This luxury hotel was so close to the main station. We arrived so quickly and were greeted by a happy smiling face. “Welcome to the W Hotel” and at that moment I knew it that it was going to be a great weekend!

One thing to really boast about is that the hotel enjoys a super-central location in the Dutch capital, probably the best one of all hotels in Amsterdam. It’s located behind the Royal Palace, a stone’s throw from Dam Square and steps from the city’s iconic canal district with its vibrant restaurants, bars and nightlife scene. Everything around is so accessible. All I had to do was just step outside and within a 10 minute walk I would reach the sights I wanted to see.

As if to reflect the Dutch capital’s quirky vibe, the hotel straddles two prominent downtown structures – one is right behind the Royal Palace, in a former telephone exchange and the other in an adjacent building across the street previously occupied by a bank. Both buildings infuse W Hotels‘ signature design-led magnificence.

When you enter the main wing of the hotel you are welcomed by a small desk with a signage “WHATEVER WHENEVER” It’s the coolest concierge service I have come across in a while. The attendants are extremely courteous, jovial and sharp. Their attention to detail about your likes and dislikes is phenomenal. Initially it was strange that the check-in was not on the same floor. I had to take the elevator to the 6th floor which opened to a lofty, airy space with expansive floor-to-ceiling windows and four outdoor terraces, I agree it’s a rather exceptional place for check-ins, obviously, but allows chilling out and mingling in equal measure.

This wing has 169 stylish guestrooms, including 10 suites and one Extreme Wow Suite (the W brand’s interpretation of the Presidential Suite). Within the Exchange building, you also find a spectacular rooftop with a heated swimming pool and the excellent Mr. Porter restaurant. The hotel’s second wing across the street is located in the Bank building and it has an additional 66 contemporary guestrooms and suites, many overlooking the famous UNESCO-listed Singel canal, as well as an Away Spa, nightclub and destination bar. The Bank building also includes the W Amsterdam’s signature The Duchess restaurant and a ‘creative incubator’ concept space, providing a platform for local talent to showcase their fashion, art and design work and also featuring locally curated products.

The hotel’s spectacular rooftop floor is the architectural and social highlight of the hotel. The minimalist style and industrial chic design, with lots of mellow grey shades, colorful artwork, bright spaces, high ceilings, and concrete floors. It brings a touch of New York’s trendy hotel scene to the Dutch capital. Modern seating, open fire places, bars and several outdoor terraces enhances the beauty of this level of the hotel and the city views are to die for! One side of the hotel looks directly onto the Royal Palace while the other three sides offer a view over Amsterdam’s rooftops. It’s the perfect venue to have a drink and unwind.

My room was an up-to-the-minute suite. It featured a super-comfy king-sized bed, an open-plan bathroom with a peek-a-boo shower, as well as a restroom and closet hidden behind a glassed door with a view of the Royal Palace. The detailing in the room was to perfection.

If it’s food you are looking for in Amsterdam then the W Hotel should be your first port of call. I am a greedy bugger when it comes to food and my first job when I go travelling is to check out the local “foodie” joints, however as soon as I set eyes on the restaurants and menus at W Amsterdam I knew I wouldn’t have to go far to get my fill of delicious grub.

The hotel features two excellent and highly recommended dining venues, Mr Porter and The Duchess. Mr porter is a unique concept that artfully blends qualities of the modern steakhouse with the buzz and experience of a chic lounge. I spent all of my mornings in Mr. Porter whilst in Amsterdam and the breakfast was to die for, everything from yoghurt pots to never heard of fresh juices, very original salads and fry ups, they also offer a Mediterranean style buffet for breakfast which is incredible, if you like something out of the ordinary to start the day then Mr. Porter is the place to be. It is a hot contender for the very best and most original breakfast in town. PS: The Eggs Benedict and the Poached Eggs and Avocado on toast are divine!

The hotel’s other restaurant, The Duchess, is located in a sumptuously decorated space (with a stained-glass ceiling) in the Bank building. It has more the feel of a French brasserie and its menu comprises of exquisite Mediterranean produce combined with light and refined flavors from Southern France and Italy. The Duchess is the most beautiful restaurant I have ever stepped in to (and I visit a lot of restaurants) The décor is breath taking, it almost made me feel posh and incredibly well off whilst scoffing my eggs Royale and sipping my perfectly blended tea! (I can assure you I’m far from it) The Duchess offer breakfast, lunch and dinner, I sampled all three and it’s a bold statement but I would eat there everyday of my life given the chance. If you are visiting I highly recommend trying the salted baked sea bass, the green risotto and for dessert the chocolate explosion, trust me, you won’t want to leave.

W Hotels definitely targets a young, tech-savvy, modern crowd and it is not different in this hotel. There is a trendy ambience, young staff, and music everywhere. The hotel has definitely a WOW factor and it’s one of my favorite W hotels around the world, the other one being the W Maldives (and I have visited many of them around the globe). Off course you have WHATEVER WHENEVER with you at the W Hotel which is there to make every whim of yours become a reality. What more could you ask for when in Amsterdam?

Until Next Time
